You may or may not know of Helen Gurley Brown, but she passed away the other day and I wanted to post something about her incredible legacy.

As Claudia Luther, in a special piece for the LA Times wrote; “In her bestselling 1962 book 'Sex and the Single Girl,' Helen Gurley Brown dared to tell American women that they inherited their "proclivity" for sex, that it "isn't some random piece of mischief you dreamed up because you're a bad, wicked girl."

I wanted to write something because this women was a very important figure for the liberation of female sexuality. Her book was published in 28 countries, and stayed on the lists of bestselling books for over a year. In 1965, she became editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine. During the decade of the 1960s she was an outspoken advocate of women's sexual freedom and sought to provide them with role-models and a guide in her magazine. She was instrumental for women in what is often called 'the sexual revolution.'

I felt this was particularly relevant in that California Exotic Novelties was started by another female pioneer Susan Colvin who started Cal Exotics in 1994. Just like Helen Gurley Brown, Susan Colvin saw the need for a woman's perspective in an industry limited by its male-dominated market. Like Helen, Susan has a keen sense of coming trends.
